The Most Popular Stops On Washington DC Class Trips

By Karla Harris

The District of Columbia, more commonly known as Washington DC, is a federal district near Virginia which serves as the capital of the United States. The capital's creation was permitted by the nation's Constitution and subsequently approved by Congress in 1790. The area is home to numerous monuments, government headquarters, museums, and historical sites which are often subject of DC class trips, taken by the local schools of surrounding areas.

Out of all the many historical areas and buildings throughout the District of Columbia, the Washington Monument is probably the most well known. The famous structure is located on the west end of the district's National Mall and is visited by nearly nine hundred thousand people every year.

The District of Columbia also happens to be the working physical residence of the president of America. The White House, as it is called, was built in the early eighteen hundreds and has been home to all the presidents since Adams. The White House is a very popular tourist attraction and tours are available to a limited number of people each day.

Another popular attraction is the Abe Lincoln Memorial, named and constructed in honor of the country's 16th president with the same name. The most memorable aspect of the structure is its large statue of Lincoln, standing at nearly twenty feet, in its main hall. It was planned by the United States' artist Daniel C. French and is constructed out of Georgian marble.

No DC field trip to the country's capital would be finished without a long trip to the National Archives and Records Administration. Situated on the north end in the Mall, the structure is home to many of the nation's most important historical documents like the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and a confirmed issue Britain's Magna Carta.

The Museum of Natural History, home to five hundred million meteorite, fossil, plant, and rock specimens, is another favorite destination for field trippers. And thanks to its many sections, including ones devoted to butterflies, osteology, and dinosaurs, the building is sure to be appropriate for all ages.
